History of George
The sixth oldest town in South Africa is steeped in traditions and is as beautiful today as it was popular in the olden days. It was also the first town to be declared a town under British rule. Its name was derived from King George III. The stateliness and colonialism is also evident in the stylish décor of the Protea Hotel King George. The area surrounding the town where the Outeniqua forests grew was a woodcutter's haven and in 1811 the site for the outpost got a name - George. The little town climbed the ranks from drostdy to a full fletched municipality in 1837.
The Slave Tree at George
The largest oak tree in the Southern hemisphere can be seen in front of the old Library. Planted by Landrost van Kervel with the establishment of George as town, the old English oak has no connection to slave trading as is often believed. It derived its name because of the chain and lock embedded in its trunk.
Memories of educational upliftment
George received its first public school for girls because of the visionary Christina Petronella Van Niekerk. Some of the memories are still embedded in the present Arts Theatre which also once served as Garden Route accommodation, but only for the girls of her school.
York Street
Named after the Duke of York who was the second son of King George III, the street is home to the last survivor of the old stately homes. House Crowther was once the residence of the town surgeon Dr. Charles Owen Snow. Some of his medical instruments can still be viewed today.
Oldest Roman Catholic Church in South Africa
George is also home to the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the country. The church which was built in 1843 is to be found in Meade Street.
